Quiet village in a small valley
Population: 391 inhabitants (source INSEE 2006)
Area size: 484 ha
Eschbach probably means: place near the ash tree brook (die Esche). The town is referred to in a donation of King Louis le Pieux to the abbey of Munster in 824.
The village was born and spread under the Saint-Grégoire Benedictine abbey. From 1287 to 1847, the village is part of the community of the Valley and city of Munster. Situated away from the Fecht valley, the town escaped the destruction of WW1.
The small green valley that goes up to the Kahlenwasen (Petit Ballon) is famous for its quietness and tranquillity. The village has preserved its authenticity, and is dynamic too.
You can find traditional 18th century houses in the heart of the village, as well as the 19th century washing-place, in front of the city hall’s elegant pinnacle.
The washing-place had a main part in the life of the village. Indeed, this is the place where the women gathered to boil up, beat and wash the linen. It was a convivial place to chat.
Just above, the whole new Dorfhüss (village hall) has a splendid view upon the Valley of Munster.
Do not miss the traditional fire of Saint Jean, the pastoral setting of the Fête du Tir of the Firemen, and the exhibition of Advent "100% local arts and crafts".
The Emile Hertzog trail starts at the end of the village to Obersolberg and Erschlitt, and takes you Buchwald, just under Petit Ballon.
